Elder Olabisi Ogunjobi was born in Nigeria on January 6, 1947. He is married and has children. He graduated with a B. Sc. degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State and holds a Master of Arts degree in International Development Studies from Bradford University in the United Kingdom.
He served in Africa Development Bank for 29 years, rose through the ranks in the Bank to the position of Vice-president of Central and Western Operations before he sought an election to become its eighth president. He later resigned from ADB in October 2005. Until his resignation, he was responsible for the Bank group operations of 26 countries in the two regions, focusing on establishing country assistance strategies and operational priorities. He oversaw an annual lending and technical assistance programme to countries in the regions and managed a total portfolio of about US$5.0 billion.
Elder Ogunjobi provided strong leadership in maintaining high-level dialogue with the 77 regional and non-regional member shareholders and partnerships with the Bank's key development partners, civil societies and the private sector. During his career in the Bank, he worked in the research and policy planning and operations departments, including West, Central, North and Southern regions of Africa.
Between 1984 and 1990, he served as the Bank's regional representative and Head of Mission for Southern Africa. From 1991 to 2001, he held the positions of Director, Country Programmes for West Africa; Director, Country Operations for North Africa and Director, Operations Policies and Review Department. He also served as the operations adviser to the Vice President Operations.
Prior to joining the Bank, in 1970, he worked in the private sector with Bentworth Finance Ltd, a leasing company in Lagos. From 1971 to 1975, he worked as a senior economist in the research department of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He served from 1976 to 1977 as adviser to the International North-South Dialogue in Paris, France. He held several corporate board appointments including serving on the Boards of Directors of Zimbabwe Development Bank, Development Bank of Zambia and African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim), Cairo Egypt. He speaks the two leading world languages, English and French, fluently. He served as the pioneer Chairman of Council to Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, and he is the current Chairman of the Board of Federal Mortgage Bank, Nigeria.
On the 2006 National Honour's List, the Federal Government recognized and honoured him with the Order of the Niger (OON) award in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the national and international socio-economic development of Nigeria and Africa. Elder Ogunjobi was equally appointed a member of the University of Ibadan Advancement Board under the chairmanship of a former Head of State, General Adbulsalami Abubakar.
He is the pioneer and current Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State.
