Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences was established in the 2011/2012 academic session as one of the three startup departments in the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (COLBAS), Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State.

The Department currently runs the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Microbiology. The department will provide foundational training and skills in the Life Sciences needed for scientific inquiry and new challenges for a productive career and a basis for Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

Philosophy of the Programme

The Degree in Microbiology is geared towards providing a sound understanding of the concepts of micro-organisms in relation to mankind and the environment.

The programme has been designed to provide a sound understanding of the concepts of micro-organisms in relation to mankind and the environment. The programme will elaborate the importance of micro-organisms in the industry, health and environmental sectors of the society. The Microbiology programme will also emphasis the traditional biotechnology and the linkage to the current modern biotechnology. The main objectives of the programme are to broadly educate students for positions in the industry, health sectors, research institutes and to prepare them for graduate and professional studies in the life applied areas of microbiology.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the degree programme in Microbiology are, to:
1. Familiarise students with the structure and functions of micro-organisms from different levels and perspectives and their interrelations.
2. Create an awareness of the rich diversity and importance of microorganisms in the industry, health and environmental sectors of the society.
3. Emphasize the role of micro-organisms in traditional and modern biotechnology.
4. Equip students with scientific methods, knowledge and skills that will prepare them for the industry, research institutes, postgraduate programmes and professional studies.
