Department of Accounting & Financial Studies

The Department of Accounting and Finance of Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, came into existence in September, 2011 when the institution commenced academic work. It is hoped that as the programmes of the Department mature, the two programmes will become full-fledged separate departments.
The B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Accounting and B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Banking and Finance are respectively a four-year programme for UTME candidates and three years for direct entry candidates. The programmes provide graduates with a broad-based background in preparation for a successful career in a variety of occupations as outlined in the philosophy and objectives. It is also to provide in the process, a solid academic base upon which to build more advanced degrees (M.Sc., Ph.D.), if so desired.
The Department of Accounting and Finance will promote synergy and collaborative researches in Accounting and Banking and Finance. This will make both students and lecturers more versatile and professionally equipped with multidisciplinary competences for managing their lives and personal businesses alongside their intellectual pursuits. The department will also provide a pool for human and material resources for anchoring a variety of diploma, certificate and higher degree courses in emerging professional management fields. The Department can also provide specialized consultancy services to corporate and public sector clients.
In addition, the Department will encourage her students to enroll for and pass the professional examinations of the respective professional bodies. In this regard the Department will do all that is necessary to obtain the accreditation of its programmes by the relevant professional bodies in addition to the accreditation of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Academic Programmes
The Department offers the following academic programmes:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting (B.Sc.)
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Banking and Finance (B.Sc.)
Accounting
Products of the Programme should be able to design and operate accounting systems to suit the needs of an organization, whether public or private. Accordingly, the Department shall strive to inculcate sound professional accounting knowledge and skills, imbued with the highest ethical and moral standards to make its graduates professionally and morally equipped for excellent performance. Graduates of this programme shall be distinguished by their professional excellence, integrity and entrepreneurial culture. Specifically, the programme will:
• Inculcate in the graduates, best practice traditions and cutting edge technologies of the Accounting profession.
• Produce students who can compete in the international labour market.
• Prepare students to be equipped for roles in advanced teaching and research.
• Develop students in leadership and interpersonal relation skills that is essential for working effectively in organizations.
• Consolidate and expand the frontiers of knowledge in accounting through development of teaching materials, research, and publications.
Banking and Finance
The department shall strive to inculcate sound professional knowledge and skills, imbued with the highest ethical and moral standards to make its graduates professionally and morally equipped for excellent performance. Graduates of this Banking and Finance programmes shall be distinguished by their professional excellence, integrity, and entrepreneurial culture. Specifically, the programme will:
• Inculcate in the graduates, best practice traditions and cutting edge technologies of the Accounting profession.
• Produce students who can compete in the international labour market.
• Prepare students to be equipped for roles in advanced teaching and research.

Accreditation
The programmes of the Department have all been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). In addition, the institute of Chartered Accounts of Nigeria (ICAN) has accredited the B.Sc. Accounting programme while the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) has accredited the B.Sc. Banking and Finance Programme.
