 Effects Of Cassava Mill Effluent On Microbial Diversity And The Accumulation Of Heavy Metals On The Receiving Environment

This study aimed at revealing the level of bacterial, fungi and heavy metal properties contamination in soil sample contaminated with mill effluent. Eha had the highest mean bacterial counts of 1.36 + 3.2 x 103 cfu/g while the least was from the control with 6.5 + 3.0 x 102 cfu/g, Eha had the highest coliform counts of 1.18 + 3.6 x 103 cfu/g while the least was from control with 5.7+ 2.9 x 102 cfu/g, Dumore had the highest mean counts of 2.25 + 1.53 x 103 cfu/g while the least was from the control with 2.1+1.5 x 102 cfu/g. Staphylococcus aureus had 22.10%, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 15.47%, Escherichia coli 14.10%, Klebsiella sp. 13.26%, Bacillus sp. 8.84%, Proteus sp. 5.80%. The fungal reported in this work include Penicillium sp. 11.05%, Aspergillus sp. 5.52% and Rhizopus sp. 3.87%. The Na+ value ranged from 1.98mg/kg to 80.18mg/kg, K+ value ranged from 3.64mg/kg to 147.70mg/kg, Ca2+ value ranged from 1.61mg/kg to 17.09mg/kg, Mg2+ value ranged from 4.21mg/kg to 20.89mg/kg, Fe3+ value ranged from 2.65mg/kg to 14.98mg/kg, Zn2+ value ranged from 0.22mg/kg to 2.13mg/kg, Mn2+ value ranged from 0.32mg/kg to 1.18mg/kg, Cu2+ value ranged from 0.10mg/kg to 1.90mg/kg, Ni2+ value ranged from 0.21mg/kg to 0.80mg/kg , Cd2+ value ranged from <0.001mg/kg to 5.83mg/kg, V2+ value ranged from 0.19mg/kg to 0.72mg/kg, Cr6+ value ranged from 0.26mg/kg to 1.03mg/kg, Pb2+ value ranged from 0.04mg/kg to 0.35mg/kg. The study has showed that soils from cassava mill effluent were more microbiological and heavy metals contaminated compared to the control. Some of the bacterial and fungi isolates isolated are responsible for infections. The heavy metals are responsible for some disease condition such as cancer in humans, thereby affecting public health. There is urgent need to develop and follow adequate effluent treatment methods to reduce the potential environmental hazards of these wastes before their discharge into agricultural lands and surface water bodies.
